You now have the opportunity to make some beta testing on PHPmail2system a GPL licensed script collection for fetching e-mails on IMAP and POP3 accounts and store e-mails with attachments on the filesystem.
The script is per default made for MySQL storage. So you only have to write a relatively simple mail client only communicating with your MySQL server.
