How useful they really are, though, depends on who you ask. Personally, I find them a bit of an annoying \u201cfeature,\u201d but plenty of folks probably appreciate having them around. Anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the more recognizable ones\u2014the friendly \u201cAhoy, this is openSUSE\u201d window that greets users of this cute green chameleon\u2014is now getting ready for a big change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/linuxiac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/opensuse-greeter-legacy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"748\" src=\"https:\/\/linuxiac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/opensuse-greeter-legacy-1024x748.jpg\" alt=\"The current openSUSE welcome greeter.\" class=\"wp-image-184592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxiac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/opensuse-greeter-legacy-1024x748.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/linuxiac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/opensuse-greeter-legacy-380x278.jpg 380w, https:\/\/linuxiac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/opensuse-greeter-legacy-768x561.jpg 768w, https:\/\/linuxiac.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/opensuse-greeter-legacy.jpg 1158w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The current openSUSE welcome greeter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The distribution\u2019s release team has started phasing it out in favor of a new system, <em>opensuse-welcome-launcher<\/em>, which will coordinate GNOME Tour and Plasma Welcome while providing a smoother, more flexible rollout experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team\u2019s approach is simple &#8211; to build on upstream solutions. The new launcher will decide which greeter to run based on the desktop session, giving developers more direct control over timing and behavior instead of depending on each greeter\u2019s autostart mechanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition is being done in steps. At first, the launcher will continue calling the legacy openSUSE Welcome, but the \u201c<em>show on next boot<\/em>\u201d option is gone since autostart is no longer its responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second phase will trigger openSUSE-branded versions of GNOME Tour and Plasma Welcome, with the old greeter left as a fallback.
