We usually feature Linux laptops in our open-source hardware section, but this time we\u2019ve got something completely new and exciting to share with yoy. Meet Paper 7 – a 7-inch open-source e-paper picture frame in a real ash wood frame, built by a tiny but passionate team in Leipzig, Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First off, it\u2019s a 7\u2011inch E\u2011Ink Spectra\u202f6 display delivers a gentle, paper\u2011like look that\u2019s surprisingly soft and printed\u2011feeling\u2014no glaring backlight, no digital glare, just the kind of viewing experience you\u2019d expect from carefully curated artwork or family snapshots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what really sets this thing apart is that Paper 7 is an open-source project<\/strong>. Software and hardware are laid bare for tinkerers and DIYers\u2014libraries for image conversion, firmware flashing, even design files and parts lists are being made available soon. In short, anyone can screw with it, improve it, or build their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connectivity-wise, the frame runs Wi\u2011Fi\u202f6 and Bluetooth Low Energy, and you can toss photos\u2014or even weather updates, daily quotes, or a to\u2011do list\u2014from a phone app (available for Android and iOS) or straight from your browser: no vendor lock\u2011in, no cloud subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Battery life? You can load it with four AAA batteries and expect about an impressive six months of use if you swap the image daily. Of course, USB\u2011C is there too, if you prefer plugging in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding aesthetics, the frame comes in a minimalist ash-wood frame, available in natural, black, or white finishes, measuring roughly 26 cm tall by 20 cm wide (about 10\u00d78 inches).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
