User does not have to fight it, Gentoo shapes so easily to your preferences. Also, it does not take too long to maintain as some claim, a few minutes per week is not too much. You do not have to watch how it compiles. I have Gentoo in all my computers, have been using it for 18+ years now exclusively (FreeBSD in one of my servers as an exception). Can’t say I regret a minute spending with it.

I used to install only what is required.
