In reply to Mike. Absolutely agree. Too many article writers praise new distros to heaven and back, but I have learned to resist totally. I use Linux Mint quite unashamedly as everything WORKS.

Size and corporate backing is not a guarantee either. It is a hazard of ‘free’ operating systems and software. Not only have OS’s shut down, software has too. – July 21, 2025

Intel announces end of Clear Linux OS project, archives GitHub repos

The Clear Linux OS team has announced the shutdown of the project, marking the end of its 10-year existence in the open-source ecosystem.

Clear Linux is a Linux distribution developed and maintained by Intel, featuring aggressive optimizations for Intel hardware. Binaries are compiled using tuning flags designed explicitly for Intel CPUs.

In an announcement to the Clear Linux forums, the team says the project will no longer receive security patches or any other updates. Therefore, its user base should migrate to other distributions for safety.

I have had three distros disappear on my overnight. Ikey’s first two Solous distros which he shut down, so I avoid the third one which is still going but which he walked away from all from personal problems and Point Linux from a developer out of Russia which is the best distro I ever used, but the developer ran out of time and shut it down.

I till use a small developer distro, Ubuntu Mate, but with a major distro Ubuntu behind it. I have Ubuntu Pro so if the developer shut his project down, I would still get certain updates like security until I could find another OS.

In my 30+ years of professional linux use, apart from a short flung with RedHat that ended in dependency hell, I have myself only run Slackware (albeit not all my customers) without any large problem, neither through distro-introduced bugs because Slackware ships all code as close to upstream as possible, nor through lack of support mostly because the bugs don’t apply or, not frequently but very reliably, are already patched in Slackware. I would say that “hats off” is way to little recognition for both Pat and the slackware community. As far as I know Slackware is the oldest still viable distribution, and long term stability & reliability has something going for it, too.

As a recommendation for a Linux (GNU/Linux) user who must preserve the work achieved with this system, I agree with this advice for choosing a reliable distribution.
But I think it’s worth remembering that projects often start from the persistent idea of a single person. Does anyone remember how a man named Linus Torvalds started a personal project called Freax… Or the idea of another person named Ian Ashley Murdock, who started with a founding manifesto…
On the other hand, and although it seems like an exception, we have the case of a company like Intel Corporation, which is abandoning the Clear Linux project, a rolling release Linux distribution.
These are facts for reflection.

So you’re saying I just wasted 12 months of my life making LastOSLinux?

I had already thought about all the stuff you said and saw how Chris Titus made his CTT tweaking tool. I decided to make LLStore that is everything I ever make or package in one GUI that you can select and install from, the best part it works on almost any Linux and even works on windows and even installing through wine.

So LastOSLinux is just a layer that goes on top of existing distros and I package them up as a bootable iso. I’ve made a Mint and a Manjaro based one, if you update the os’s like the vanilla ones it’ll work fine. The apps are installed through the distros own App Store, so get updated. Yeah my documentation is a little slim, but as this is the first year I’ve used Linux, I brought along 25+ years modding Windows, from LastXP to Last10 (we don’t talk about windows 11).

I know it’s not suitable for business or non English users, but it’s focused on local home users for putting on salvaged hardware that I sell cheap at the local online centre I volunteer at, so they all use English.

It’s not the most professional app/code by a long shot, but the goal was to make a OS that had all the features of my windows mods and using similar tools I wrote for that over many years, with my team.

If your bored, fire up the vm and give LastOSLinux an install, remember to run LLStore and actually see if it saves you time and makes it simpler for a basic windows user to operate.

I totally agree, as a developer I have to apply the same thing to any library I might use, and I’ve seen some great ones come and go by single developers, I only use a single or small team library if I’m willing to fork it, and continue development my self, and some libraries are worth it, most aren’t though.
